Sara Wylie is an Associate Professor at Northeastern University with a joint appointment in Sociology/Anthropology and Health Sciences, where she is a member of the Social Science Environmental Health Research Institute. Wylie seeks to develop new modes of studying and intervening in large-scale environmental health issues through a fusion of social scientific, scientific and art/design practices, and is engaged in developing open-source research projects on low cost thermal imaging, low cost imaging of water pollution, community-based methods for detection of hydrogen sulfide among other civic science projects. Her book, Fractivism: Corporate Bodies and Chemical Bonds published by Duke University Press is an ethnographic study of the role science based NGOs played in the emergence of public concerns about the human and environmental health impacts of chemicals used in natural gas extraction, particularly hydraulic fracturing.
In 2016 cofounded the Environmental Data and Governance Initiative (EDGI). EDGI is a collaboration of academics and non-profits working to track and respond to changes in U.S. federal environmental governance. Wylie has co-edited with Rebecca Lave EDGI’s 100 Days and Counting series of rapid response, public reports detailing and contextualizing changes in environmental governance under the Trump Administration. Wylie also coordinates the EDGI’s Environmental Enforcement Watch Project.
Sara Wylie is a cofounder of Public Laboratory for Open Technology and Science, a non-profit that develops open source, Do It Yourself tools for community based environmental analysis. She received her Ph.D. from MIT’s History, Anthropology and Science, Technology and Society (HASTS) Program.
Wylie is also a senior JBP Environmental Health Fellow with Harvard T.H Chan School of Public Health. In 2017 she was recognized by the Collaborative on Health and the Environment (CHE) as one of 20 Pioneers in Environmental Health under 40. Her CHE webinar summarizes her book, work with Public Lab and EDGI.

2021-Spanish Language Environment Enforcement Report Cards. In 2021 EEW released our report cards for congressional representatives overseeing the EPA in Spanish. https://www.environmentalenforcementwatch.org/data/reports-es
2020-Present. Environmental Enforcement Watch Report Card events. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is charged by Congress to enforce laws that protect people from air pollution, water pollution, and hazardous waste. Two key congressional committees oversee the EPA to ensure it meets its mandate: the House Energy and Commerce Committee and the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee. Based on an analysis of EPA data, EEW Congressional Report Cards give the members of these Congressional committees—and their constituents—the chance to evaluate whether the EPA is fulfilling its mandate in their state/district. Eventually, we hope to compile reports for every district in the U.S.
2018-Present. Healthy Gulf Land Loss Lookout. Protecting the Gulf of Mexico from pollution and wetland destruction requires constant vigilance. Often, the best way to keep an eye out is from the air. This project facilitates public involvement to help Healthy Gulf identify patterns by looking at aerial images of the coast.
2016-Present. Co-Founder and Steering Committee member of Environmental Data and Governance Initiative (EDGI). The Environmental Data and Governance Initiative (EDGI) is an international network of academics and non-profits addressing potential threats to federal environmental and energy policy, and to the scientific research infrastructure built to investigate, inform, and enforce environmental regulation. EDGI builds online tools, events, and research networks to proactively archive public environmental data and ensure its continued public availability. EDGI monitors changes to federal regulation, enforcement, research, funding, websites and general agency management at EPA, DoE, NASA, NOAA, and OSHA. EDGI also produces research reports and develops models for future democratic environmental governance.

EDGI Data Rescue Events. Through EDGI, Sara Wylie assisted in organizing a nation wide network of events known as Data Rescue to archive vulnerable federal datasets, one of which was held at Northeastern University. 47 events were organized in total leading to the most thorough archiving of federal environmental available online to date by the Internet Archive.

Public Lab is a non-profit, online community that develops open source hardware and software for community based environmental monitoring.

Cartoscope is a platform for citizen science through crowdsourced data analysis and mapping. By sorting, labelling, and locating images, community members can contribute to a variety of mapping projects, such as disaster response. Organizations can create their own projects and invite participants to help assist with their missions.
